West
End Sports & Social Club (WESSC) was founded as the Oakley Institute in the
late 19th century to provide a youth centre for local boys. It was
renamed and rebuilt as a single storey “portacabin” type structure in 1972.
in order to provide a community facility for West End which still exists very
much as a village. The land held in trust is shared with the land on which the
Village Hall stands and such land, together with the site of
In
September 2005, the old building was demolished and a new clubhouse built on the
existing footprint that was moved some 15 feet back from the road in order not
to obscure the recently installed stained glass windows in the Village Hall next
door. The new clubhouse re-opened in April 2006 and has proved extremely popular
with both the sports and social sections of the Club as well the local community
at large.
There are successful adult football and cricket teams both of which play in local leagues on Saturdays and Sundays.

There is
also an enthusiastic Pigeon Club and a thriving Darts team
The Club provides a variety of social facilities for
the
community. Quiz Nights, a Book Club and Social Evenings have a broad appeal for people of
all age groups. The Club is used by "Buttons & Bow", a community
afternoon club for the over 55s, a local school as a base for Charity walks and an environmental group
(the Countryside Team). The West End Flower Show is run jointly from the Club
and the Village Hall and the Club holds a Carol Concert each year in
WESSC is managed by a Management
Committee that is elected at the AGM held in May each year. The current

The Oakley
Institute is a registered charity (Registered 25th April 1973,
Registration Number 264526).

of the charity are to provide a sports pavilion for the benefits of the
inhabitants of the Parish of Esher (
