West End Sports & Social Club

West End Sports & Social Club (WESSC) was founded as the Oakley Institute in the late 19th century to provide a youth centre for local boys. It was renamed and rebuilt as a single storey “portacabin” type structure in 1972. in order to provide a community facility for West End which still exists very much as a village. The land held in trust is shared with the land on which the Village Hall stands and such land, together with the site of St George’s church forms a parcel of land gifted to the commoners of the village by Queen Victoria

In September 2005, the old building was demolished and a new clubhouse built on the existing footprint that was moved some 15 feet back from the road in order not to obscure the recently installed stained glass windows in the Village Hall next door. The new clubhouse re-opened in April 2006 and has proved extremely popular with both the sports and social sections of the Club as well the local community at large.

There are successful adult football and cricket teams both of which play in local leagues on Saturdays and Sundays.

Football Saturday - AFC West End   (Kingston & District Leagues)
Sunday - AFC West End (2 sides) (Leatherhead & District Sunday Leagues)
West End Vets (Sunday Social Football)
Cricket West End CC (3 sides)  Fullers Brewery Surrey County League

There is also an enthusiastic Pigeon Club and a thriving Darts team

The Club provides a variety of social facilities for the community. Quiz Nights, a Book Club and Social Evenings have a broad appeal for people of all age groups. The Club is used by "Buttons & Bow", a community afternoon club for the over 55s, a local school as a base for Charity walks and an environmental group (the Countryside Team). The West End Flower Show is run jointly from the Club and the Village Hall and the Club holds a Carol Concert each year in St George’s church.
